This is your typical Guardian reader middle class tosh, filled with intellectual cyphers and recognisable caricatures, though it’s still light and amusing. I still don’t se the appeal of Gemma Arterton as she simple can’t act in a any serious way, but the direction and the rest cast made up her short comings.

Set in a strange English village which is home to a writers retreat managed by Tansin Greig and Rodger Allum, Tamara Drewe returns home with a new nose and creates a stir amongst her old acquaintances. But of course, she is a writer too, as is everybody in this village apparently. She also meets up with her old flame, Andy, played by Luke Evans who may as well have been cast solely for his uncanny resemblance to James McAvoy.

There’s adultery, murder and lots of sex, but in the end all seem to be happy, but I was far from convinced by this conclusion. Smartly written it may have been but this was just too quintessentially English for my tastes but that’s not to say that it wasn’t without it’s charms.
